What We Do

How Does Our Anger Management Classes Work?

 It is a misconception that anger management is about learning to suppress anger. Never getting angry is not a healthy choice. Instead, anger management teaches you how to understand the message behind the emotion and how to express it healthily without losing control. Thus, anger, often a negative emotion, can be transformed into a positive force. Our students learn how to reframe anger and how to deal with it in healthy ways. Our course employs the following resources and interventions:

1. How to identify triggers and their underlying causes;

2. How to apply new skills such as time-outs;

3. How to address issues with assertiveness;

4. How to establish a plan of action;

5. Learn to problem solve;

6. Learn how to change self-talk and cognitive distortions;

7. Learn how to turn anger into forgiveness;

8. Learn stress management skills;

9. Learn conflict management skills; and

10. Learn how to manage stress through relaxation techniques.

WHO SHOULD TAKE OUR CLASSES?

 Anger is a basic human emotion, similar to happiness, sadness, anxiety, and disgust. However, anger can be expressed in a healthy or unhealthy and harmful way. When anger is expressed in an unhealthy manner – too frequent, too intense, too long, too aggressive – it can have destructive results for you and those closest to you.

Unhealthy anger can have the following serious consequences:

  • Physical health: those with chronic anger problems are more likely to suffer from headaches, insomnia, increased anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes, weakened immune system, heart attack, and stroke.
  • Mental health: chronic anger consumes a lot of your mental capacity. It can impede your thinking and concentration. It can cause stress and depression and lead to other mental health disorders.
  • Relationships: chronic anger can lead to arguments, physical fights, physical abuse, and assault in interpersonal relationships. It can cause others to view you negatively, distance themselves from you, or end relationships.
  • Careers: chronic anger can cause disruption in the workplace. It can cause alienation from colleagues, supervisors, and clients.

People often experience anger from numerous sources, such as feeling disrespected, feeling unheard, or undervalued, personality clashes, low self-esteem, traumatic events, depression, grief, mental health disorders, loss of hope and control, feeling attacked, health issues, conflict, stress, job dissatisfaction, financial pressures, and family or relationship concerns.

We encourage people with hidden anger, unexpressed feelings, or those who exhibit significant outbursts or act aggressively when angry to attend our classes. Also, people who are depressed or withdrawn, who feel hurt, abused, controlled, or hostile, or people whose relationships have been damaged by anger or whose jobs are in jeopardy due to anger outbursts can attend. You can participate whether you are court-ordered and want to help yourself or others. This course can teach techniques that will assist in regaining control of your emotions and relationships.
